Humla is one of those places that exists in the popular imagination as the remotest of the remote mountain districts. It is located in the north-western corner of Nepal and its the epitome of the beautiful but harsh Himalaya. It has no roads leading into it from the rest of the country, so it is only accessible by walking for two weeks, or by tiny mountain planes. Yet somehow, within Humla, communities just about survive on subsistence farming and migrant labour. They are decades behind the rest of Nepal in terms of technology and ideas; and food insecurity, illiteracy and poverty make them ripe for exploitation by traffickers and other profiteers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humla_District.
